A British airplane en route to Poland was forced to make an emergency landing in Germany after a 56-year-old woman spilled a hot cup of tea on herself, German police said on Wednesday.

The Ryanair flight from Liverpool to Poznan made the unscheduled landing in the northwestern city of Bremen on Tuesday, local police said.

The British woman was treated for scalding at the airport and released — but not before the plane resumed its journey without her. She later took a train to Poland, police said.

STUDY: Poor sleep habits lead to poor nutrition

Teens who sleep less than eight hours on weeknights tend to eat more fatty foods than those who doze longer, researchers have found.

The sleep study involved 240 Cleveland teens ages 16 to 19.

Teens who slept less than eight hours on weeknights consumed 2.2 percentage points more calories from fats and 3.0 percentage points fewer calories from carbohydrates than teens who slept eight hours or more, after taking factors like age and sex into account, researchers said in Wednesday’s issue of the journal Sleep.

The changes in diet patterns offer insight into why less sleep has been linked with obesity in previous studies, said the study’s senior author, Dr. Susan Redline, a professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Record Food Stamp use in June, 41.3 million people

The number of Americans receiving food stamps rose to a record 41.3 million in June as the jobless rate hovered near a 27-year high, the government said.

Recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program subsidies for food purchases jumped 18 percent from a year earlier and increased 1.2 percent from May, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said today in a statement on its website. Participation has set records for 19 straight months.

About 40.5 million people, more than an eighth of the population, will get food stamps each month in the year that began Oct. 1, according to White House estimates. The figure is projected to rise to 43.3 million in 2011.

France expands fast-food outlets geared toward Muslim community

A French fast food chain announced on Tuesday it would almost triple its line of halal hamburger restaurants because sales had doubled in a trial that sparked a heated debate about the integration of Muslims.

The Quick chain of 358 restaurants around France said it would boost its halal-only outlets to 22 on Wednesday after the trial in eight areas with a strong Muslim population also saw a doubling of customers and a rise in the amounts they spent.

Quick, which is a challenger to the U.S. hamburger chain McDonald’s and runs franchises in seven other countries including Belgium, Russia and Algeria, said the move was purely commercial.

“We’re in a very competitive market and we’re the challenger,” said General Manager Jacques-Edouard Charret, whose company competes against about 1,150 outlets for the U.S.-based McDonald’s.
